How to Learn Veeam and Zerto: Certification Paths and a Realistic Study Plan
VMCE+ has replaced VMCE and comes with over 50 hours of mandatory training. How to build practical competence on both platforms, and a 90-day plan.
Short answer: Build a lab before buying a course. On the Veeam side, VMCE has been replaced by VMCE+; under Veeam's training program, attending official training is mandatory before the exam and the total training load is over 50 hours. Zerto has no comparably structured public certification ladder; you prove competence through hands-on design and testing experience.
What changed in Veeam certification
The long-standing VMCE has been upgraded and renamed VMCE+. Two specialist tracks sit alongside it: VMCSE (Veeam Certified Security Expert) and Veeam Certified Enterprise Architect, which is based on an invite-only panel review.
VMCE+ requires completing training across three components: Veeam Backup and Replication, Veeam ONE, and Veeam Recovery Orchestrator. Engineers who hold VMCE from the v12 or v13 exam can skip the core VBR training and upgrade with the Veeam ONE and Orchestrator modules.
Three practical points:
- Training attendance is mandatory. For VMCE+ and VMCSE you cannot self-study and go straight to the exam.A Veeam University PRO subscription is a prerequisite. Both the VMCE+ and VMCSE paths require it, so the certification budget is no longer a one-off exam fee.Price. The subscription gives 24/7 access for 12 months; customer pricing is around $1,899 per seat and partner pricing starts around $1,600 for four seats. Confirm current pricing before budgeting.
With more than 50 hours of training, you cannot compress this certification into a weekend. Plan the calendar accordingly.
Zerto: skill rather than certification
Zerto has historically emphasized partner-focused enablement over a broad public certification ladder. For most engineers the efficient path is:
- Study the platform architecture until VRA, VPG, journal and checkpoint become second nature. There is a summary in our article on how Zerto works.Build a lab with two small sites and protect a multi-machine application. Our Zerto getting-started guide sets out the order step by step.Run a test failover, then practice failback.Deliberately misconfigure a VPG and watch how the recovery breaks.
If you work for a partner company, request access to vendor enablement material through your partner manager.
A 90-day plan for an engineer new to data protection
Days 1-30, fundamentals. Learn the vendor-independent concepts: RPO, RTO, the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, the difference between backup and replication, and why immutability matters. To derive the targets, follow our guide on how to calculate RPO and RTO. Build a Veeam lab, back up a virtual machine, restore it, and recover a single file from inside it.
Days 31-60, depth in one product. Choose Veeam first; its coverage is wider and it counts for more in the job market. Build a hardened repository, verify that root cannot delete a backup file, configure a copy job to a second tier, and run a timed full restore drill. Our Veeam getting-started guide covers the build order.
Days 61-90, add replication. Build a Zerto lab. Create a VPG containing a multi-tier application, watch the journal grow, run a non-disruptive test failover, and practice failback. Compare the measured RTO between a Veeam restore and a Zerto failover for the same workload. That comparison teaches more than either product does alone.
What actually gets asked in interviews
Certifications open the door; these questions decide the outcome:
- Describe a recovery that failed and what you changed afterward. How did you set RPO and RTO for a particular workload, and who approved them? How would you protect backups from a compromised domain administrator? How many days did you set the immutability period to, and where did that number come from? What is your measured RTO, and how do you know?
The fourth question is the one that separates candidates: no exam measures the difference between someone who answers "whatever the default was" and someone who says "above the median dwell time." We gave the source for that number in the ransomware recovery playbook.
Answers grounded in a real drill are worth more than any exam score.
Frequently asked questions
Is VMCE still valid? Existing holders can upgrade to VMCE+ by completing the additional modules rather than starting over.
Can I pass VMCE+ by self-study? No. Attending the relevant training and holding a Veeam University PRO subscription are prerequisites for the exam.
Should I learn Veeam or Zerto first? Veeam. It covers the larger share of the market and of the work. We worked through where the two diverge in our Zerto and Veeam comparison.
Do I need a paid lab? No. Community and trial editions with nested virtualization on a reasonably powerful workstation are enough to learn the concepts.
